HOW TO MAKE BIOPLASTIC?

There are a lot of process and components requires to create a bioplastics. Some of it are the organic materials such as avocado peels, cornstarch, kamote starch and banana peels. By creating usable bioplastics can help our environment to reduce the usage of traditional plastics that are polluting the planet.

Our team decided to create a study about the differences of results in creating bioplastics with different materials such as potato starch, kamote starch and cassava starch. The process of creating our bioplastic do not requires heavy equipment to finish. It only need materials that can be found at home and only needs sun to complete the product.

The ingredients that was needed:

  • Any starches (20 grams)
  • 5 mL of vinegar
  • 180 mL of water
  • 15 mL of glycerin
  • 3 g of Gelatin

The materials that was needed:
  • Pan
  • Foil
  • Spatula
  • Measuring spoons
  • Weighing Scale

(Watch the video below about creating bioplastic.)

Summary from the video above:

To create the bioplastics it needs: starch, gelatin, vinegar, water and the most important part which is glycerin. The materials that needed was pan, measuring spoons or weighing scale, spatula and a bowl. For making bioplastic start by mixing all the given ingredients into a bowl until all the mixture dissolves. After all of the components dissolve, place it into a pan to heat up the solution at low heat for about 3-5 minutes until it becomes thick consistency. When it becomes sticky place it on the foil and spread it out evenly using spatula to prevent any uneven texture to the product. After it cools down place it under the sun for 8 days to dry out all of the moisture that was within the bioplastic.

Recommendation:

  • If you your bioplastic results in separation with in the process of drying means that it lacks glycerin or gelatin. To prevent this problem just increase the amount of glycerin and gelatin to the mixture.
  • When on the drying process of bioplastic make sure to prevent it from getting wet in any way or else it will ruin the product by resulting in molds that can build up to its surface.
  • If you want your bioplastic to be more flexible just add more glycerin to the mixture, it will result in better flexibility of the product.
  • If you want your bioplastic to be more sturdy,  increase the amount of starch to the solution for it to become much harder or sturdier. Also  placing it under the sun for a much longer period of time will make the product more sturdier too.
